The real puzzle here is why "colorful" used as a password hint. I don't get it.

I'm not a programmer, so I may be wrong, but I think the puzzle no longer works as intended.
<span class="not"> supposed to make certain parts of the text look different to the rest. However, it's not specified how different they should look.
Maybe it was too easy and was changed.

On further investigation, I think you are right.

Using 'not' as a value for a 'class' attribute in html code should have probably invoked some kind of code execution trick that doesn't work at least since IE10.
