Nah Loom has certainly some creative "out of the box" puzzles like
Show Content
it's quite reasonable you find them difficult. It was a really sweet game, I loved it, but as you mentioned really short. I wished someone would pick the franchise again

Life caught up with me and my February post got delayed. I ended up spending a lot of the month figuring out how to write a script in Python to organize my collection in Obsidian. I want to post a long explanation of how this works in the other section at some point, but for now I just want to say I'm very happy with the outcome.

That said, even though I didn't complete a lot of games last month I did finish three.

Barn Runner: Don’t Jerk the Trigger of Love (2004): Another extremely short chapter in the Barn Runner series. The gameplay in this one is mainly around an arcade sequence in a shooting range. I like that the developer tries to use the AGS engine to try to create different types of games, even if it's not always the most enjoyable. I still like the characters and humor so I will be continuing with the series. Recommended

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2001): I started the trilogy on Switch a few years ago and fell off of this one around the fourth case. Last month, I decided to finally power through the last couple of cases after seeing the game make the top 25 and I'm glad I did. I ended up really liking the investigation and trial mechanics in the end as well as the characters. I'm not sure I would go so far as to put this in my top 25 of the past 25 years, but after finishing it, I left feeling happy knowing there's like ten more games in the series to play and they're all relatively easy to get a hold of, but I'll wait a bit before jumping in to the next one. Highly Recommended

Dumb Heist (2024): This is a freeware game by Powerhoof (developers of The Drifter), where the developer made the game with his son. It's a short silly game and I just think it's cute with developers use game making to get their kids into adventure games. Recommended

I just finished the demo of Beware of the Cartographer! by Tohu Bohu Games. Took me about 8 minutes, but it gave a good impression of the atmosphere and the way it works. It's really wonderful. The character interactions are funny and interesting, you get to choose the way you approach the people you meet, it really delivers an engaging experience. The map making provides some nice puzzle mechanics and gathering locations as an alternative to the traditional inventory objects is a good conceptual twist, used in both the map making and dialog puzzles.

You can "talk" to animals as well, they're quite expressive, even if they don't speak your language.

I'm about to start  Pepper Odyssey by Wavey Games. It's an AGS game, but I think it leans into RPG territory.

I also have a couple of recent games I need to try/finish in the freeware/pay what you want category. More on that in the  Following Freeware/Pay-What-You-Want games thread, as soon I'm ready.

Hey Beware the Cartographer seems really neat! I'll sure pick it up when the full release is out! Another game I played that has a similar vibe  noone talks about is Bilkins' Folly! It's all about finding treasure using arbitrary directions and hints! No inventory based puzzles. I really enjoyed it

Recently I finished Escape from castle Claymount a free escape room game. It was very charming with its clay animation and pleasantly challenging. Also highly reccomended

I'm currently playing "A Vampyre Story". Never played it before so it's about time. You can read about it on my blog.

Recently I finished the main story of "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle", but I'd like to go back and do all the side quests, find all collectibles, solve the optional puzzles... It's on my son's PS5 so I'm sure he'd rather I free up the 133GB it takes up so he can stop juggling drive space for his own games.

I'm also playing a game for an AGH review so I can't disclose which one it is, of course...

Lastly I've started playing a little bit of "En Garde!" as well but that's not an adventure game, I've just been playing it when I only have some limited free time, not enough to invest in an actual adventure game. I always feel you need to spend at least an hour if you want to play an adventure game decently.

I am replaying one of my all time favorites, The Legend of Kyrandia, Book One, just made it out of the caverns, (whew), it is overall a classic AG, one of the best of the best. The Voiced edition is the only one to play and the story, the art, the music!!!!  all so amazing.  And there are 2 more sequels to enjoy.  Also continuing a third play thru of Anachornox, in Vottown. finding the clues for the voting. LOVE that game too. such an adventure in the story of its making, The creator has the second part of the story all prepared but never was made as the company closed down, not sure if he is still alive. The last employee of the company stayed on in the empty offices for a long time and finished the game and there is even an editor for making new content!  Can't say enough good about either of these. Omikorn is on my to be played again list next i think.

Absolutely love the music in the Kyrandia games! Frank Klepacki knocked it out of the park and from what I can gather, he was quite young when he composed the soundtrack for the first game.

Great atmosphere overal. Some questionable puzzle design here and there, but that never stopped me from enjoying this classic.

Frank's music is superb i managed to find old software to play the original games i have to get the full impact of his work and it IS wonderful
re the puzzles, YES some ore ...not easy. Not even solvable ...almost Smile

but the story and the game itself makes one perserver. I still die often in the Caverns lol. I wait long enough between replays that it is painful and real and ...of course, FUN!!!

the many ways he can die are so funny some of them. Got eaten by the pond monster at Zanthias' yesterday....ah the memories. Smile and i had to remind myself many times SAVE SAVE SAVE....

I like all three of the games but frankly the last one does not measure up to the first two. The VA work is also superb..all of them.

I absolutly love all Kyrandia games and Westwood games in general. Non adventure games like Eye of the Beholder II and Lands of Lore are among my favorite games. There is something about their pixel art, Lore, atmosphere and writing that is very memorable and nostalgic. I still cant believe you can just leave the fireberies on the ground in the Kyrandia Maze's first game and leave the rooms lit, when i understood it by accident it blew my mind, makes the maze so much easier. To this day i never understood if this is intented or a bug. I finally finished the third Kyrandia  a couple of months ago. My favorite is the second one, Zanthia rulez  Heart
