LHG, I like melodic metal, alt rock, neo progressive. I like big band from the 30s and 40s. I like baroque from centuries ago. And then some random stuff that’s adjacent to those types. I grew up listening to Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Who, then when I was grown, it was Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson. Later moved toward Magazine, Joy Division (but not New Order), The Smiths, the Cure. Then goth metal, Evanescensce, Nightwish, Within Temptation. Then Cage the Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, Band of Skulls, Beseech. I still listen to those last few currently. My current faves are Dredg, Antimatter (a perennial favorite), No Money Kids, Left Hand Solution, Placebo… actually, although my tastes are narrow, it might be quicker to list what I don’t like: rock oldies, especially southern rock oldies (I get sick of songs on repeated listening, and most rock oldies I never liked much in the first place), New Wave from the 80s, rap, country, pop, anything with Autotune in it, and symphonies.

Eirik, can we listen to your music if we Google your name? Otherwise, links please Smile

You mean these ones?  Big Grin I also picked them up back in 1997 and they made a huge impression on teenage me.

I think you really should try a hand at composing! Smile  You seem to already have a great understanding of music in general. The «something blocking you», is it kind of a voice in your head that says you can’t write so and so, a kind of self-doubt? If it is, I think that’s a very common thing for all creative people. If I think too much or start doubting my own ideas too much, it gets very hard to create anything good. I also find that the best ideas do not appear while I am in the studio, surrounded by tools. Rather, when I am on a walk, or in the shower or whatever, and just let my mind float around, that’s when the best ideas often appear. I hurry up and grab my phone and just sing those ideas in while they’re fresh. That way, when I’m in the studio later, I already have a plan, which I force myself to stick to. Then there is no room for doubt, because I have already committed to a particular something!

These things of course vary a great deal from person to person, but I’ve heard about similar experiences from quite many artists and composers. Smile

Thanks for this. Yes, I think self doubt is a huge part of it, but there's also a struggle to create any ideas of my own in my head. I can sit in front of an empty DAW and find that absolutely nothing comes out. I've tried a few strategies, including making intentionally bad music just to get something down, and taking part in challenges that impose fun limits (e.g., a 60 second piece of music in an '80s power ballad style that must include flute).

I do at least have a vague idea of the kind of instrumental music I would like to create, but getting down to specifics is a bit of a battle!

Sure you can – thanks for asking! Big Grin You’ll find it on both Bandcamp and streaming services like Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music and (probably) all of those. I also have a website, but a fair warning: It contains almost too much info..!

Be assured that it is a constant battle for me too. And some days you feel like you’re just shit, and all your ideas are shit. I think it will probably always be that way. If you listen to interviews with one of the world’s most fantastic film composers (in my opinion), Danny Elfman, you will find that he is *excessively* full of self-doubt, and constantly talking himself down. His reaction to someone giving him his first gig as a feature film composer was essentially, «You’re making a big mistake!» I guess this kind of constant «battling with ones own mind» is a personality trait for many artists and creative people. It goes to say that many of us are also neurodivergent, which I believe is no coincidence. Shy

Hey Eirik, I’ve been browsing through your Bandcamp from time to time over the past couple of weeks. I admit I only sampled some of the soundtrack scores since I think those tend to need a little more context to fully appreciate. I did really enjoy what you did with Oslo with making city sounds into a song ? The things I’ve listened to more than once are Peer Gynt: Selvets Keiser, Wait for It…, and Escapades. Thanks for sharing ❤️ Really good stuff!

Have you ever, or would you ever, do a soundtrack for a video game? If I were a game maker, I would hire you in a heartbeat!

Hey Jen! Thank you!! Smile  I really appreciate it! Heart

I have *almost* been involved in a couple of game projects, but they never went into production, so it’s still on my bucket list! I would love to do music for games!

Well, actually, I *did* do some music for Kahoot! back in 2016. Technically not really a game, so I often forget mentioning that. Big Grin

I'm a drummer, so... nope.

RE: Any musicians here? - Hexenwerk - 12-02-2025

I had piano lessons as a kid as well, like LadyKestrel.
I never asked for it, but got to like it. Haven't played since years, since I haven't even room for a keyboard in my small apartment. I thought about getting one of those roll-pianos, but I am not convinced I'd enjoy that. So, I am missing that a bit.

My brother and I myself taught me playing guitar a bit. But mostly just enough to play the usual chords to sing along. Haven't done that for a while, and when my guitar stands in the corner, collecting dust, unfortunately the strings are always teared when I want to play again after a few years.

As a teenager, a few friends of mine and me wanted to start a band. We wrote our own Weltschmerz-songs, were inspired by Nirvana, Die Ärzte, Die Toten Hosen and ... But Alive, but everything ends, like school.

I got myself a Ukulele, but didn't enjoy that as much as my (classic analogue) guitar, since I prefer the deeper sounds of that.

I played Djembe for a while, after I had participated spontaneuosly in a jam session and played on such an instrument for 2 hours. I enjoyed that so much, but playing at home was different, so it collected dust.

I played a bit kazoo, but just for fun to annoy people.

And a friend gave a noseflute to me some years ago, which is a reeeeally cool instrument you can play without needing dexterity. Can really recommend this, it sounds like a wooden recorder/flute. And it is small, you can take it everywhere.

This year I dreamt of building (or buying) a Theremin. But I would love to have a classic one made of wood, and those are not available for purchase anymore.
Instead I got a They'r'mean. I need to phrase my wishes more clearly I guess. Maybe this dream will come true some day. Of course I'd need to learn it and I am very sure that it would be frustrating for a while.

Maybe join a choir instead to sing a bit?
This year I got a harmonica for my birthday, which was cool, since I liked the character playing harmonica in the Moomin's game I just played shortly before. But I'm playing seldomly, without aspiration.

For now, just a bit of whistling now and then, since I always have that instrument with me, or the noseflute.

TL;DR: I guess not. Big Grin

lol

shoutout to all musicians here - and everyone with a song in their heart!

So many things that hit close to home - did not expect a reference to But Alive..!

I had guitar lessons for a while as a kid, some stuff happened in my family and I had to quit. I bought a seven string guitar when I was sixteen or so - it got.. reapropriated. My nu-metal era never crystalized.

I was semi-attached to our school band, from hanging around during practice. They pulled me on stage for the punk rock songs in their reportoire (Ramones, Pennywise, Green Day) and that one RATM song. We played our high school dance (to the dismay of some of our teachers) and a couple of gigs after that in local youth clubs.

I've always enjoyed playing bass lines on regular guitars. A couple of years ago, I needed some sort of occupational therapy and I got an old, busted bass guitar. One of the knobs was missing, but apparently it didn't work anyway. Eventually it gave out entirely - I still have it, I mean to get it fixed some day. It's pretty scratched up but I love the tone, even when playing accoustic. I got another second hand bass that I still play to this day.

I play it upside down. At first I tried to teach myself to play right-handed, but since I played guitar left-handed, it was more intuitive to pick with left and hold down strings with my right.

RE: Any musicians here? - Hexenwerk - 12-02-2025

It is funny that you mentioned the upside down guitar playing.

When my best friend and me held a guitar for the first time, I held it the other way as well (although I am not left-handed), and convinced her that how she did it was wrong. For a while. Until I realized. And never did it that way again. Big Grin

Also liked to just play the bass strings of my guitar now and then. I think there is that one song everyone can play/knows the melody, but I don't remember the title. That one can be played on those bass strings so well. I'm sure you know it.

Just like the Flohwalzer (Chopsticks?) on the piano. Somehow everyone here knows it, even without ever having had any piano lessons.

I liked to teach myself playing certain melodies based on listening, on piano and guitar, like that one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwxtHILcrxg
or the melody of Jurassic Park on piano.

I played the latter once in school for my music teacher to earn myself a grade at all, after I didn't participate in the lessons before. Big Grin
