I like the composition of Za©K McKrac(k)en slightly better, but The Secret of Monkey Island has the spirit of adventure, a skull and an air of mystery.
I'm going with Monkey Island - it seems more exciting.

monkey island has always struck me as one of the worst covers specially considering how good the game is

The Secret of Monkey Island.
I remember looking at that box art in magazines long before I was able to play the game, thinking of all the possibilities and the promise of adventure.
It has that Drew Struzan kind of composition, which I always dig when it is done well.
While I do like the pulpy charm of the Zak box, too, sometimes you've got to make hard choices.

I vote for The Secret of Monkey Island. To me, both covers are too busy. I like the crazy arrangement and colors of the Zak McKracken lettering better, but the black and gray tones at the bottom are a miss for me. I think the colors are used better in MI 1.

They're pretty similar, but I'm going with MI.
The font at the bottom of ZM is hard to read, and the MI cover slightly matches the mood of the game better.
