Thanks! Not every game is going to be for everyone - I gravitate towards titles that are not high budget productions, but shine in other departments.Black Sect is probably going to be my next classic freeware recommendation. I have a batch of recent freeware titles coming up - I need to finish them first, so I can give an honest assessment.

Your positive feedback makes me smile with my heart, to paraphrase a song that's been stuck in my head the past week.I'm still playing through the new batch, so I thought I'd recommend a series I didn't include in previous post. They didn't make the cut, not due to a lack of quality, but because they don't really provide any narrative. They do have a lot of charm, though. Pretty good puzzles, nothing that will break your brain. Fun for the whole family.

I'm working through a batch of new(ish) releases, which is taking longer than I thought. Since I put the focus on games with narratives, characters and puzzles, I leave out visual novels and room escape games. I do check them out, to see if they maybe lean into AG territory enough to be eligible. Sometimes I end up playing one start to finish because of their quality, even if they don't meet the criteria.
Here are two room escape games that do something I found original and enjoyable.
Bakescapery by 8BitLlama
This one just has tons of charm. The music, the little sound effects and colour scheme work together in way that's quite relaxing, while the puzzles increase in difficulty, just a good formula to keep you engaged. Original concept for an escape room as well.
DarkForest by MaximKolesnikov
Perhaps the polar opposite. It goes for a more traditional setting, ups the graphics and initial tension - once you manage to get past the game's early stage and discover its conceptual twist, you're probably in for a pleasant surprise.
Both games are fairly short and you if you pay attention, you can figure out each puzzle with relative ease. That's not to say they're straightforward or without challenge: I feel they give you just enough to figure things out, without relying on any leaps of logic.

At the end of the month Gugames (developer of The Will of Arthur Flabbington) is releasing all of their freeware games in a single package called the Adventure Jampilation on Steam. No new games are explicitly mentioned in the description, but this could be a convenient option if you haven't played any of them yet. Of the games in the collection, I've played No Rest for the Wicked, The Death of Fo-gu and Eulogy for Nonno (already mentioned previously in this thread) and can recommend all of them.
