Four Challenging Questions of Diabolical Indecisiveness! - Legerdemancy - 11-22-2025

This is a multiple choice survey poll regarding preferences. Sounds innocent enough, but hopefully it's a bit more provocative like my thread title suggests.

1. If you were forced to choose between playing only adventure games exclusively forever, or being able to play every other genre ever created such as RPG, platformer, etc. - which would you ultimately choose?

2. Which is the more entertaining protagonist, Guybrush Threepwood or the duo of Sam & Max? (Somewhat unfair to be pitting one protagonist against two, but hey, I designed this quiz to be intentionally unfair.)

3. In a parallel universe where every single adventure game must have the compulsory inclusion of a slider puzzle or a maze, you get the unenviable decision of picking which one gets included. Which filler puzzle will you include to make the populace inevitably riot in the streets? (Not on purpose, mind you).

4. Only one control scheme for every adventure game. The choice is keyboard controls only or just mouse clicking. Why? Just because.

This is a fun and interesting poll! Big Grin

1. Because other genres can have strong adventure elements to the point where they're essentially "adventure game with X", I'm going to go with "all other genres". I also enjoy many genres of games a lot, not just adventure games.

2. First off, I don't think it's an unfair comparison at all: Sam & Max is essentially a single character, because they're always together, and it's the dynamic between them that makes them interesting. If you were to have a game with only one of them, I think they would likely be rather uninteresting characters in the long run. You can't have Sam without Max, nor the other way around. You could even say that them appearing as two different characters is practically an illusion, writing wise, and that the dynamic between them is itself the character. Alone they're very onedimensional characters, each of them is just a single idea, and that's all there is to their character. But together they're ... well, they don't make up a total of a threedimensional character, but they at least become (kind of) twodimensional and a lot more interesting.

All that said, my choice would be Guybrush Threepwood. He's a threedimensional character with depths and layers to him. And that's my preference. I like the Sam & Max games, and the characters, and they wouldn't work as well as they do for their games if they had more dimensionality to them. But my preference is the more relatable, albeit still comedic character of the pirate wannabe.

3. Maze or slider puzzle? Easily the latter. They're usually rather easy and over with in a matter of minutes. Mazes and labyrinths can take hours, potentially days if you have no hints or outside support.

Also, the "parallel universe where every single adventure must have the compulsory inclusion of a maze" was essentially just our universe at one point in time. Tongue

4. While I actually generally prefer point & click for adventure games, if I had to choose one or the other to be the only possible choice in existence, I'd go with keyboard controls. Why? Because it gives a lot more options for variety in the games. Mouse only is very limiting.

I’ll play:

1. All other genres: I love AGs, but they’re only a small part of the video game panoply. AG elements in other genres abound, but other-genre elements in AGs are most likely to ruin the AG and that mostly due to poor implementation.

2. Sam and Max are more entertaining, but Guybrush is a better character.

3. Slider puzzle. I don’t enjoy mazes or sliders, but mazes make me cuss a lot and sliders usually only once, like this, “not another $#$&())# slider puzzle!”

4. My ideal is touch screen. Peripherals, blech. But given the binary nature of your choice, I’ll go with keyboard.

1. Such a hard decision, because my love for adventures and roleplaying games is equal, and my favorite games are hybrids! I'll pick adventure games though for now.

2. I pick Guybrush Threepwood. I just like the story of the guy who just follows his dreams. I haven't played Tales of Monkey Island, but overall have played more games with Guybrush than with Sam'n'Max.

3. I have chosen "Mazes", because I think that a maze can still be cool when there is proper guidance provided, and it isn't written here that such help isn't allowed. Big Grin

4. I choose mouse. Once I returned a game once I realized it doesn't have mouse input and has to be controlled with a keyboard ... I'm fine with two buttons and maybe a coin menu where you get a few more options. There can still be some element in the hud for even more special actions, or choosing verbs or clicking on text links.

1. All other genres. Pretty easy choice actually.

2. Both are good but I felt MORE from Guybrushs games than Sam and Max's games. I'm sorry, furries.

3. Mazes. Maybe my choice speaks to the adventure games I play. But its not my issue, because per this poll, I'm now only playing every other genre. Put both in for those who voted adventure games, they'll love it.

4. No option for controller? I only play adventure games on Nintendo Switch.

I went with adventure games. I enjoy most other genres but my love for adventure games runs a little deeper, it feels more personal.

I'll go with Sam & Max for entertainment.

Maze - to me, an "open world" can be a maze - cliffs, rivers and thick row of trees can create different paths and points of access. I like it when games give you something to explore and ask you to think in terms of distance, pathways, landmarks and obstacles. If we're talking full-pull labyrinth, that's a tougher sell. I will take 'em, though. It's rough when they're purely based on trial and error - but they don't have to be.

Slider puzzles are fine as well, they're just kind of bland.

Keyboard, I'm fond of parsers. Mouse is fine and also most convenient.
Controller is a bold move.

1. Adventure games - If I can get to all the ones I own but haven't played yet, I'll die happy.
2. Sam & Max - I like furry critters.
3. Mazes - I really enjoy them.
4. Mouse - It's second nature for me. When I have to use the keyboard, it takes me away from the game.

Considering that the Space Quest Historian is now speedrunning forum posts, I can't wait till he weighs in on this topic.  Big Grin

1. Adventure games. I already play almost exclusively those, anyway.
2. Guybrush. No contemplation here; not even a competition for me. NEXT!
3. Slider puzzles. As someone else said, while frustrating, they tend to be faster. I can at least see the whole thing in front of me.
4. Mouse, but this was kind of an ehhh I don't feel that strongly about it.

Am I? Big Grin

1. I already play adventure games pretty much exclusively, so that's an easy pick.
2. Sam & Max. Guybrush is a fucking sociopath, but at least Sam & Max are honest about it.
3. Tough call, 'cos both can go to hell, but mazes at least are exploratory and you can put cool shit in a maze. A sliding tile puzzle is just meaningless filler.
4. Mouse. You can get a cordless mouse and play from the comfort of your sofa or bed.
