Is there a way to delete your acount? - BobVP - 11-27-2025 I've looked into this a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't see an option to suspend/delete an account from the user side. I suppose you can always just remove your profile picture and stop logging in, but I was wondering if there was a "clean" solution hidden somewhere in the user options. RE: Is there a way to delete your acount? - Jen - 11-27-2025 You’re not leaving, are you? <sobs> RE: Is there a way to delete your acount? - BobVP - 11-27-2025 Nah, the plan is to stick around for a while. I was looking around the user interface and I wondered how it'd work. It's apparently a forum/bulletin board thing. I did a quick search and in (very) rare cases it's in the UI, others tell you to contact the administrator. KInd of a modern expectation of an older medium, I suppose. RE: Is there a way to delete your acount? - Jen - 11-27-2025 Whew! I’m glad you’re staying
RE: Is there a way to delete your acount? - Jackal - 11-28-2025 As far as I know, there isn't a user option to do so. I can't say I'm a fan of doing it at all, honestly, even on the admin side, as it's really disruptive to have whole swathes of posts and even threads suddenly disappear. That's not really fair to all the others who have contributed to them. But of course we'll try to honour any requests along the lines if the need arises. RE: Is there a way to delete your acount? - Hexenwerk - 11-28-2025 I have seen it happen in another (old but still alive) forum, and it made me very sad. Threads were shredded, other users replies didn't make any sense anymore after posts or thread starts were deleted. Since even after the user has left, the communication will be hurt for years after when not just the account, but also the posts get deleted. Even users who didn't know the deleted user can still feel that, not even knowing why it happened. Fingers crossed it won't happen here. I personally prefer it when the posts/threads can be kept, and the deleted account author replaced with an anonymous [deleted user] or something like that ... except when they posted something personal about themself. Of course something "personal" published in a forum on the internet is not "private" anymore, but users should have the right to remove that, since it can always mean some risk for them in some way (for example when they are being stalked or whatever). So there might always be a good reason behind such a request. RE: Is there a way to delete your acount? - BobVP - 11-29-2025 I get that - the convenience of deleting all your posts in one fell swoop might be too much power. Especially when someone feels unfriendly towards the forum. Then again, users can delete messages when it suits them, among other things. It's a system that leaves a lot of room for.. let's call it ambiguity. To me, it'd be more about contact information and stuff like that. And being able to make a clean break: moving out, rather than closing a door in your house and ignoring the room, if that makes sense. Anyway - it's what I signed up for. It's not a complaint or even a request - just getting a sense of how things work. Sorry if this went a little dark - I taught myself to think about the "if it ever comes to that" quite late in life. I might be doing it in a crude manner. It was a vary useful guide for my working life at least

There's a time limit on user post edits. (A lengthy one, but not forever.) Quote:To me, it'd be more about contact information and stuff like that. An email address is all that's ever asked, though, and that info is never made public. RE: Is there a way to delete your acount? - Jen - 11-29-2025 Who are you hiding from, Bob? What kind of secrets do you hold? What’s it worth to you for us not to tell everyone where to find you? $$$ |
