The developer said there was a way to bypass the card game: if you lose six times to an NPC you haven't beaten yet, Prim loses interest. You can then play against your father.

I won this game courtesy of the Mystery Manor 'staff' on getting a place in Lady Kestrel's last year's Halloween Tournament on Mystery Manor. It turned out to be a lovely game to choose. It's a while ago but from what I can remember you can beat your father but you do have to play against everyone else possible before that.
