I made a thread in the forum feedback channel about games and Jackal said that it is okay to talk about games with sexual content as long as it's in the community's interest. I guess this recommendation will be a test. I haven't seen this game discussed anywhere and it's the most unique game I played last year.

There's an anonymous game jam collective on itch.io called Domino Club that has a couple of themed game jams a year. Many of the games in the jams are visual novels, but some have more interactivity. Many are also NSFW, including the one I want to recommend called Garkb Larodf released as part of the Domino: Declassified game jam last year.

It's part visual novel made in GBStudio for the Game Boy and part ARG. There is one scene of pixelated gay alien sex, so be warned if that's a deal breaker for you. However, I thought that the way to "solve" the puzzles in the game was really cool and I hadn't played anything like it before. If you're open minded, and in the mood for something different I think it's worth checking out.

I managed to get past the first screen, but the interface jammed on me a couple of times. I hope others have more luck, it's a good/original recommendation!

Hmm, if you figured out how to solve the first puzzle, the rest of the game should be straightforward. Maybe it's a browser issue?

Hey so I played Garkb Larodf. Its like a three minute Visual Novel, maybe 10 max with the puzzles. The puzzles belong to the ARG category as its hinted on the info under the play window (it's a web game) and are essentially a series of codes to continue the "story", I won't elaborate more for not spoiling. The rest (3 minutes) is just pixelated p*rn,  just an explicit sex scene you would find in a typical adult film but with some nice Gameboy art. The reason I call it P*rn is because it's just sex for the sake of sex so to speak with the shallow "story" just being an excuse for it in contrast for example to the "girl in the shell" series that may contain explicit scenes but have an elaborate plot with multiple paths (the explicit scenes not being the point of the visual novel but just a part of it and many times optional). I am not being judgemental or anything and not saying this is bad, there are "games" that belong in the broader adventure spectrum that for example only have a series of puzzles with the story just being decorative like Safecracker, or other ones being just an exploration experience like Proteus or ones that mainly focus on the story like  the visual novel "Milk inside a bag of milk inside a bag of milk" and Garkb Larodf is p*orn for the sake of it with a pinch of ARG. Personally though I am not a fan of explicit scenes just for the sake of them and prefer more elaborate Visual Novels

Fair enough, it's definitely not a game for everyone.

I did play another freeware game With Our Eyes Wide Open which won first place in the visuals category in the $108 Adventure Game Challenge thanks to those gorgeous Ben Chandler backgrounds. Unfortunately, it feels unfinished and the dev has since removed the download link from the itch page because of this. Hopefully they get a chance to revisit it at some point, because it does show promise.

Two short free PnCs I really enjoyed recently:

The Supper

If On A Winter's Night, Four Travellers

(Apologies if these images are massive, the width/height thing didn't seem to be working!)

Both wonderful, dark little experiences. I recommend playing them and supporting the devs elsewhere if you can.

All my adventure games on itch.io are currently free to play.

Dread World is a scifi adventure game on an alien planet.  Lots of gross ways to die playing this one.
https://linearregression.itch.io/dread-world

Be a skeleton out for revenge in this adventure game.
https://linearregression.itch.io/draven-slade

You're a rabbit on the moon in this scifi adventure game.
https://rolanfox.itch.io/luna-zakis

These are all fairly short and can be played in less than an hour.

I'm collecting games for the next batch and I recently got two suggestions for modern freeware classics that will definitely get a spotlight in this thread. Plenty of material, but I knew I wanted to give first classic recommendation to this series:

Broken Windows!

Police Quest reimagined in Brexit-era Britain, without the baggage of dead ends. It blends realism with comedy and b-movie thriller escapades. The gameplay: straight-forward dialog and inventory puzzles.

GOC Games has a penchant for depicting  British culture with affinity and jovial irony. This series gives the same treatment to its source material: it doesn't go anti-cop, but it does subvert and sublimate it's Law and Order tendencies. Broken Windows takes elements of proceduralism to set the tone, but quickly shifts to more fun and creative puzzles. It's more sensational elements are somewhat more critical of authority and social control, rather than going after "unwanted elements in society". And it's not afraid to have a little fun at its own expense, either. Despite some serious undertones, the games run on good-natured, understated comedy.

Each installment builds up to a cliffhanger. The writing is well-paced and has a good sense of plot development.

At certain points, especially near the end, some elements lack a little polish - no game-breakers, though. A great tribute to a classic series that never really recovered from Chainsaw Monday, with a contemporary outlook and charmingly British disposition.
