If you had asked me back in 1995, I would have picked Full Throttle in a heartbeat. Today, maybe it has not aged as well. And format wise, I was never a big fan of horizontal cover format – it just looks wrong, somehow.
I get that they were going for something completely different, and were very focused on selling this as «not your average slow adventure game». This one has action and explosions! It worked great at the time.
But what still works great is the Sam & Max cover. I vote Sam & Max.

Tough one, Full Throttle has great pizazz. But Sam & Max reminds me of an illustraion I might have seen in Mad Magazine, a longtime favorite of mine. I even had several advertisements created in-the-style-of Jack Davis, an illustrator famous for his work with Mad Magazine.

I think the Full Throttle box art is well done and suits the game splendidly, AND it says "A Heavy Metal Adventure", which is probably the fastest way to get my money. But Sam & Max is more fun to look at and just looking at it makes me want to go on a road trip and stop to play putt-putt on a zany course in the middle of nowhere, then have lunch in a diner shaped like George Jetson's car, somewhere else in the middle of nowhere.
